I have heard that they are gulping air to inflate the swim bladder. Also that it is related to predation like your friend describes. I have never caught a fish after witnessing porpoising despite beating the water to a froth so the predation theory holds less weight with me. Maybe OHH is on the right track. It is just another one of those things we may never know the answer to and for me that's part of the fun. Maybe santa knows, he is always a great source of info.
Rocky, I am sorry but my expertise does not run into muskie. I live in the deep south and get to fish mostly southern waters where muskie are not common. Actually tidewaters are my region of personal expertise. I have only ventured into the northern waters while fishing a few bass tournaments and sadly have not had the pleasure of the muskie and pike experience.
Yet I have caught well over sixty species of salt water fish and almost every species of fresh water fish in my area. Living on the gulf coast does spoil a person like me and it was only natural for me to gain knowledge of the fish in my area.
